This is a short dystopian story emphasizing the real-life issue of human consummation on our earth’s natural resources for retail including the simpler technology that will be used to soon track us down in place of the cameras that will no longer be in use. Chopping, Breaking, Melting and Mending only destroying our nature for coins. Here is a glimpse of what will become of our world 40 years from now which will severely impact our health and lifestyles rather than please us materialistically.
2057
I loved the view, it was surreal. Purple tones filled the sky, washed with shades of pink and gold. The water was crystal blue, and the sunlight peeked through the few clouds that remained and reflected towards the sparkling waves which bounced off into my eyes blinding me. I ran my fingers through the soft thin sand as our feet rested on the edge of the warm salty water. I picked up the sand as it smoothly ran back down the palm of my hand as if it wanted to escape the feeling of my hand or maybe it did not enjoy the existence of my hand. “Stop it, it is only sand”, Addison reminded me. She knew exactly what was going through my head. “C’mon, I told you we should have stopped doing this a long time ago!”, “But just look at it, I want it to be real again!”, I raised my voice. She pressed the lower button on her side twice realizing my heart-rending trauma, it was time to snap back into reality. We brought the mouth covers hanging down our necks back up toward our lips. I dusted myself off, we were now standing in between factory waste. Years of debris piled up into towers, 2017 rested at the bottom. Blocks of metal scraps and burned rubber on the ground. Injected microchips at our hips which glitched a few virtual uses, we could enter the scenery of our imaginations and transport momentarily. It was the simpler and less expensive way. Given the moment a newborn takes their first breath of this cruel world, used to keep tabs on us. Clenching chains of carelessness. First, the government allows us to devour our planet then does not allow us think above them and make moves. It is like they planned to let us to fall into this hole yet set boundaries now so we cannot do anything about it? I do not understand, why did they let it get this way? About ¼ of our planet is gone already, luckily I live in the 25% that is slowly decaying too. Although it is something I am thankful for, I am not proud of it. We cleaned out forests leaving poor animals without homes, working factories polluted our air which caused global warming, we contaminated our beautiful oceans and rivers, fossil fuels were dug up, and we used up our water and oil. We unconsciously increased our demands building and making as we slowly used everything up leaving nothing. We destroyed what we cannot create. I remember being able to walk down the streets of this town and safely breathe the unpolluted air and see the green grass, the flourishing flowers, and the buzzing bees do their thing. We were once able to tell between the ocean and the sky by the distinguishing blues, now the fact that we no longer have an ocean cannot go unnoticed. Branches no longer float at the top of our heads, clouds no longer form nor let rain down. We took our planet for granted and now we have to pay for it with our lives, and now it is time to move onto the next planet the government says. They have unstrapped the clenching chains for a moment.
Melissa, I truly enjoyed reading this piece of yours because it opened up my eyes when you said “Clenching chains of carelessness” because people do not care about what is happening to the world and just choose to ignore reality. This could happen if we choose to ignore it and do not try to solve this problem as soon as possible.

Dear Melissa, I enjoyed your piece of writing. I liked how you talked about a problem of 2017 which is ruining mother nature. The sentences,” I dusted myself off, we were now standing in between factory waste. Years of debris piled up into towers, 2017 rested at the bottom. Blocks of metal scraps and burned rubber on the ground. Injected microchips at our hips which glitched a few virtual uses, we could enter the scenery of our imaginations and transport momentarily. It was the simpler and less expensive way.” made me feel sad. Your writing helps me realize that we are harming mother nature and sooner or later there won’t be a mother nature. I really enjoyed your piece of writing. Thank you for sharing your story.

Thank you for reading my story. It is a real life issue that we are throwing under the rug, but soon enough it will backfire on us, and you are right we are “ruining mother nature”. I really tried being descriptive with this topic so readers can create a mental image of what our world may look like in only a couple years from now.
